Review: Quokka Finds a Friend

How can you not fall in love with Quokkas, with their lovely round tummies and cute smiley faces!

 

When Quokka meets Seal he thinks he's sad because he isn't smiling (Quokka loves to smile).

He tries his hardest to be Seal's friend and make him smile. He tries lots of funny faces but still no smiles. Copying the humans, Quokka pretends to take a selfie with Seal (this always makes the humans smile) then Quokka falls in the water.

 

Seal says he will teach Quokka to swim but when Quokka says he really doesn't want to swim Seal replies that he really doesn't want to smile.

They soon find something they both love doing; watching the sunset together.

 

Quokka Finds a Friend is  the sweetest story about friendship and that friends don't need to like everything the same. Differences don't mean you can't be friends, you just need to find some common ground.

 

Highly detailed,  colourful illustrations pair with minimal text to make this read-aloud story book warm and inviting. Could Quokka get any  more adorable!!

Quokka and Seal's personalities pop from the page through Katie Stewart's adorable illustrations.

 

Beside its wonderful moral about friendship the story can be read for sheer cute appeal.

Review: Jack's Best Day Ever

I bought this book thinking it would resonate with Jay as he is neurodiverse and also has a boy in his class who uses a wheelchair.

 

He loved the story, as his class had also visited the zoo, he enjoyed talking about all the animals he saw, just like Jack. He wasn't so keen on the part about trying new foods, as Jack very bravely tries the apple, carrot and strawberries that the animals are having for lunch.

 

Jack's Best Day Ever is narrated by his best friend, a young girl in a wheelchair . She champions Jack at every turn, stating how clever he is; like a walking encyclopedia. She understands and accepts his quirks and talks about the things he likes and dislikes. They simply enjoy being together!

 

Jack's Best Day Ever is a heartfelt story of friendship, acceptance and trying new things. A perfect fit for primary school aged children. It would be a valuable asset in the classroom to open up discussions on neurodiversity and cultivate understanding and acceptance of different ways of being.

 

The vibrant, fun and expressive illustrations by Annabelle Hale add to the overall appeal of this delightful picture book.

Review: Ethel the Penguin

We've been loving books about penguins lately and Ethel the Penguin is another 'must read' that we've added to our shelf.

Ethel is that wild friend everyone needs! She is not afraid to make a fuss and have some fun. The teacher makes her sit by herself in class because she's full to the brim with mischief.

When she climbs to the top of the Ferris wheel and scares her poor parents, she really is sorry ...... for a little while. 

Ethel the Penguin is such a fun story! Ethel gave us all a bit of a giggle as she misbehaves in class causing a ruckus and jumps from the Ferris wheel forgetting penguins can't fly. She is totally impulsive and very much wild.

Ursula Dubosarsky uses anthropomorphism but I love that she didn't make Ethel totally human. Rather than living in a house she lives with her parents in an igloo. 

Christoper Nielsen's full page illustrated spreads are bright and colourful and the rhyming prose flow effortlessly making Ethel the Penguin an energetic and delightful read.

I can see this being one of our favourites for a long time to come.

 

We can hardly wait to see what Ethel will do next!

Review: Bravepaw and the Heartstone of Alluria

Bravepaw and the Heartstone of Alluria by L.M. Wilkinson is the first in a new fantasy series for young readers.

 

Titch, a young mouse, is enamoured with the legend of Bravepaw - the bravest mouse who ever lived. She loves to swing her sword and pretend to be a warrior.

 

Her mother tells her they don't need warriors as there are no monsters anymore. However, when the monsters return, trying to suck all colour and heart from their world, Titch, along with her friend Huckleberry, must draw on all her courage to defeat the curseworms and save the villagers.

 

Bravepaw and the Heartstone of Alluria is the most endearing tale. The book opens with a map and a prophecy which had me immediately engaged. This story has action, danger and suspense in bucketloads. Titch is the cutest protagonist I've seen in a long time and you can't help but love her.

 

This enchanting tale is about friendship, bravery, believing in yourself and doing the right thing by others. 

Filled with adorable characters, from the lovable Titch and her faithful friend Huckleberry to the oh so cute little Dollop. I'm excited to read the next book to see what adventures and dangers await this little trio as they venture on their quest to heal the heart of Alluria.

Large print and enchanting illustrations by Lavanya Naidu make this suitable for even the youngest readers.

A Leaf Called Greaf is an invaluable resource for parents and educators which explains, in gentle terms, the changing nature of grief and sadness after loss.

 

We do love Kelly Canby's books with her lyrical prose and whimsical pictures and A Leaf Called Greaf is another heartwarming book to add to our favourites shelf here at Little Squirrel's Bookshelf.

 

Bear is grieving, his brothers and sisters have left him, and he is all alone. Bear becomes attached to a soft green leaf and takes it everywhere with him. He names it Greaf and finds comfort in its company.

As time goes by Greaf starts to wither and crumble and no longer gives Bear comfort so Bear starts to let it go. One morning Bear wakes and Greaf is whisked away on the breeze and Bear is ready to face a bright new day. Bear's journey will give children a helping hand to understand big emotions in a child friendly setting.

Kelly Canby's expressive illustrations pair with meaningful and lyrical text to deliver a heartwarming story of the phases of grief.

 

I think, with a little guided explanation, A Leaf Called Greaf can help children understand their feelings of sorrow when a beloved grandparent dies or moves away,  or the passing of a much loved pet.

Review: Hide and Seek

Hide and Seek is the eleventh installment in Anh Do's smash-hit Wolf Girl series.

 

Gwen and her canine friends escape Moon City but the Braxans are not too far behind them. With the help of friends they manage to evade the soldiers and hide in an abandoned shopping centre. But they soon find out they are not alone!!

 

Hide and Seek is another action packed addition to the Wolf Girl series. There are no boring bits in this story, it's action galore!

There is lots of danger and also lots of fun as an assortment of tricks and traps are set up to thwart the evil Braxan soldiers. Wolf Girl's canine friends add plenty of humour with their doggie banter and funny antics.

 

Extensively illustrated throughout, with half and full page black and white sketches, which add an extra element of comprehension to the story.

 

The search for her parents continues as Gwen and her canine friends move on to a new adventure. 

 

Wolf Girl is a series that needs to be read in order as it is an ongoing story and there is no backstory included.

When Eli's friend Max tells him that a kelpie pup is going to be sent to the pound if it isn't adopted, Eli's family decide they are ready for a new dog in their life. They go as a family to visit the farm and pick up their new dog and name him Zoom.

 

In Kelpie Chaos Deb Fitzpatrick portrays the challenges of having a new pup in the house as Zoom gets up to lots of mischief and the family needs to adjust to his puppy stage.

 

I liked that the whole family took on the job of exercising Zoom and taking him for walks. The parents didn't push the chores solely on the children.

 

Kelpie Chaos is an action packed read with lots of fun moments as Zoom likes to chase lawnmowers, at the local park, as though he is rounding them up. 

Lots of danger and suspense when Zoom goes missing during a picnic in the bush and as night falls they still haven't found him. Eli and his family refuse to give up hope.

Kelpies are fast becoming a popular family pet and Kelpie Chaos shows the fun in owning such an energetic dog and also the commitment required when sharing your life with this breed.

Review: How to Move a Zoo

How to Move a Zoo is a beautiful picture book that illustrates the true story of how, in 1916, Jessie the elephant walked from Moore Park Zoo to her new home in the Taronga Zoological Park at Mosman.

The pencil full colour illustrations are charming and nostalgic, presented with a hazy softness that encompasses the nighttime setting.

How to Move a Zoo is a wonderful story from a bygone era. The story follows Jessie the elephant as she quietly walks through the streets of Sydney, whilst everyone sleeps.  From Moore Park down Burke street through the Botanical Gardens to Bennelong Point where she boards a barge to take her across the harbour.

Owen Swan's engaging illustrations perfectly portray a long-ago era with milk-carts and street-sweepers. With a little prompting children can spot the many birds that inhabit the area; kookaburras, magpies, seagulls, cockatoos, lorikeets, rosellas, even a brush turkey can be spotted in the pictures.

The picture of Jessie's new home, the elephant house, will be recognised by many children today.

How to Move a Zoo is a heartwarming picture book that will give hours of enjoyment to children and carers alike.

Review: Talent Quest: Smarty Pup #4

JJ the genius pup is back again with book 4, Talent Quest!

 

If, like me, you are new to Smarty Pup there is an intro explaining how JJ got to be so smart and be able to talk.

 

Dad's birthday is coming up and Lily and JJ don't have any money to buy him a present.

The perfect opportunity presents itself via the school talent quest which has a cash prize.

Lily and JJ sign up for the singing category. The only problem is JJ CAN NOT SING!

 

Lots of fun ensues while JJ learns to sing and costumes are selected. They almost miss the big day when JJ has an emergency dental appointment.

 

Filled with bright colourful illustrations and words that pop from the page,Talent Quest is sure to delight children and adults alike. JJ keeps delivering the dad jokes one after the other which had Jay laughing and saying "enough dad jokes."

 

This is such a fun story and I love that the Smarty Pup series has full stories with a conclusion, which is great for younger readers who may not understand the concept of a story continuing in the next book. At 200 pages it is a good size for older children to fully immerse themselves in.

Talent Quest is a story about trying your best and working with what you have.

 

This was lots of fun to read together and it kept Jay entertained and eager to know what was going to happen next.

Review: Cargo's Furry Friends

Cargo's Furry Friends is another beautifully illustrated picture book in the Cargo series. In book #4 we are introduced to Paul and Cargo's pets. Coco the golden Cocker Spaniel, Poppy the Cavoodle, Carmen the fluffy white cat, Percy the shiny black cat and Olivia a sandy-coloured Groodle. When they are all together there is lots of fun and even a little mischief!

 

Spend the day with the pets as they do some important jobs around the yard and have fun playing together. Beautifully illustrated with full colour spreads and an engaging storyline.

 

Cargo's Furry Friends is an uplifting and positive story about friendship. It's a lovely, fun read that will be enjoyed by all children, especially those who love trucks and animals.

Review: The Race Is On 

The Race Is On opens straight where Sink Or Swim left off. Gwen and nine other contestants are about to start a grueling cross-country challenge with the winner having a wish granted.

 

The Race Is On is another faced-paced story filled with half and full-page visually engaging illustrations.

I liked that this story had a bit more substance which will have readers thinking and learning in a subtle way.

 

The Race Is On sees the nine contestants pitted against each other through a challenging, and at times life threatening, cross country run. Gwen always shows good sportsmanship but there are others that will do anything to win. When another contestant finds themself in serious trouble Gwen cannot turn her back and stops to help. The other contestants see this and begin to work as a team. But only one can win? During the course Gwen battles with this dilemma and also the question of what her wish will be if she wins. 

 

Gwen is a wonderful role model, considerate, forgiving and smart. The search for her parents continues as Gwen and her canine friends move on to a new adventure. 

 

Wolf Girl is a series that needs to be read in order as it is an ongoing story and there is no backstory included.
