Review: A Hat for Every Harriet by Jess Horn

A Hat for Every Harriet is a playful story about learning to be yourself and realising that the carefree version of yourself just might be the best version of all.

A Hat for Every Harriet is a beautiful story about thinking differently and learning to navigate social situations.

Harriet had a different hat for every situation; a hat for helping in the yard, a hat for school, a hat for listening even a hat for being silly. Her hats reminded her of what she had to do and helped her stay in control. If she felt wiggly in class she wore her listener hat.

However, when they were preparing for the school dance there were lots of different jobs to do and Harriet would need all her different hats. But the hats stacked up and started to wobble until they fell. Harriet didn't know how to just be Harriet without a hat.
With some help from a friend Harriet started to dance and had fun just being herself but she knew her hats would always be there when she needed them.

I love Zoe Bennett's life-like illustrations with lots of little fun elements added in. Illustrations that make the reader stop and savour each page. One page has Harriet's twin brother and sister hiding amongst her hats, another page has two magpies and an ibis (bin chicken) walking past the bins on the street and at the dance all the children are wearing glow bracelets.  These lovely little additions catch the eye and make the story so much more fun.

Bernie from Bernie Thinks in Boxes also makes on appearance with Harriet and Bernie going to the same school. This link brings the two books together and gives children an instant connection between the two books.

Jess Horn's books teach children about themselves and others without them even realising they are learning as they enjoy the fun of the story.

My rating 5 / 5 🎩👒🤠🥳👒
